Words by Design is a visual communication design firm specializing in global marketing and development communication.
We believe graphic design can be a great social catalyst, used to create a better world through simplifying the complex, improving understanding, reaching across boundaries and motivating others to take action to improve lives. We work at the intersection of communication design and development and specialize in crafting simple visual solutions from complex concepts, presenting to audiences large and small, and working in media as broad as print, video, interactive, web and the written-word.

In 2004, Habitat for Humanity's international board of directors came to the in-house art department I managed, requesting the ultimate design job: a complete redesign and redevelopment of our global logo and identity system. Over the next year, I led a team of local and international designers in developing a system built on user-input that considered the applications and culture of our more than 2,000 locations in then 95 countries. After the new design, system, and online tools were launched in 2005, I traveled worldwide to roll it out and speak to the importance of branding in nonprofit work, culminating with a presentation at the 2006 American Marketing Association national conference. I count this project as one of the greatest honors I've had as a professional designer and director.Art Direction, Branding, Graphic Design2011 -
Selected web and multimedia projects. As marketing moves more and more online, its been a blast to work in this medium, which I find liberating - lots of room for experimentation and feedback, and exciting to work in a field that my non-profit clients have found very powerful in raising awareness and funds.Web Design, Video Arts, Production2011 -

The World of Hope: It starts at home campaign is a five-year, $3.9 billion campaign currently underway at Habitat for Humanity International. Undertaken by affiliates in countries around the world, the campaign acts as a federation of smaller campaigns, and needed a robust, flexible identity that reflected local fundraising goals while maintaining organizational consistency. Together with a talented writer, we created a theme meant to remind donors of the importance of a simple, decent place to live in acting as a foundation for better health and improved education and literacy, thus appealing to a broader range of philanthropists. One of the largest campaigns initiated by a nonprofit, the World of Hope campaign has facilitated some of the largest gifts in Habitat's history.Advertising, Creative Direction, Graphic Design2011 -
The State of Wisconsin, where I served as an Emergency Medical Technician on a local volunteer community ambulance, was updating their license patch, worn on the sleeve of thousands of EMTs state-wide. I created a more colorful design, with the rural and urban landscape of Wisconsin as well as a forward-leaning rod of asclepius, indicating the energy and the progressive nature of the service. Oh yeah, and the green and gold refer to more than just crops and cheese! Go Packers!Branding, Graphic Design2011 -
Resources for Human Development is a comprehensive, nonprofit, social service organization, overseeing and supporting more than 160 locally managed human service programs in 14 states. Working with their awesome MarComm team, I designed these pieces to support both specific programs as well as the overall marketing aims of the organization. A wonderful client with a worthy mission!Branding, Graphic Design, Web Design2011 -
The face we show the world, researching and building identity design systems that capture the heart and personality of an organization has got to be my favorite design activity.Graphic Design2011 -
Freedom House is an independent watchdog organization that supports the expansion of freedom around the world. Freedom House supports democratic change, monitors freedom, and advocates for democracy and human rights.
Since 2002, I've had the honor of designing their signature piece, the "Freedom in the World" map, based on their comprehensive annual report of the same name. Ranking countries of the world based on human rights, press freedoms and civil rights, its been fascinating to work on, especially with the rapid changes in the world.Graphic Design2011 -
Crafting a identity system for a major event is always exciting, particularly when it involves research into the visual artifacts of another culture and how to respectfully incorporate that within the overall identity system.Exhibition Design, Graphic Design2011 -
These are projects I undertook as a US Peace Corps volunteer living in Kenya. Teaching HIV/AIDS education at a local technical college, I had a blast engaging the students in employing the power of graphic design and advertising to influence positive change in their lives.Advertising, Art Direction, Graphic Design2011 -
In January of 2010, Haiti was devastated by an earthquake that killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands. As part of Habitat for Humanity's response, I had the honor of leading a creative team in developing multimedia products to raise awareness and funds to build a goal of 50,000 houses in Haiti. Two years later, much of the devastation can still be seen, and our efforts continue. The project shown include designs I created as well as creative projects I directed.Creative Direction, Graphic Design, Multimedia2011 -
When I'm not on the computer, I'm working with my hands. I'm an aspiring bookbinder, enjoying the tangible nature of this age-old craft. I'm inspired by paper, typography and the illustrative and artistic styles of particular movements in history, ones that emphasize the beauty of well-selected material and show the evidence of the human hand in their creation.Fine Arts, Illustration, Visual Arts2011
